What's on around Huntsville

November 2026

Big Spring Park fills with more than 450 lit Christmas trees on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and they stay up through New Year's Eve. Downtown Huntsville calls it the Tinsel Trail, local families and businesses sponsor and decorate the trees themselves, and the 2026 sponsorships sold out before the trail opened.

Two light displays, six home hockey games and a Veterans Day parade make up most of November around Huntsville, and the month opens with an election on the 3rd. Every date below was confirmed for 2026 with the organizer, the venue, the city or the state office that runs it. Anything I could only find on a previous year's listing was left out, and I have named those further down so you know they were checked rather than missed.

I'm Jeff Moran, NMLS #483943, a mortgage broker licensed in Alabama through C2 Financial Corporation, and I have been in the mortgage business since 1996. I work out of Bluffton, South Carolina, and I have not been to these myself. The information below is public, linked beside the date it came from, and I checked all of it on October 26, 2026. If you are looking at homes around the metro this fall, my Huntsville area buyer's guide covers Madison and Limestone counties, the Arsenal gates and the homework that goes with an address here.

Tuesday the 3rd is the general election

Election day is Tuesday, November 3, and four statewide constitutional amendments are on the ballot along with the races. The Secretary of State's office publishes the sample ballots and the amendment language, and voter registration for this election closed on October 19.

The absentee windows have already run. The Secretary of State gave October 27 as the arrival deadline for a mailed absentee application and October 29 for an in-person one. Absentee ballots had to be handed in by close of business on November 2, and mailed ones have to arrive by noon on election day. So the 3rd is the last chance to vote, in person, at your assigned polling place.

I am not taking a position on any of the amendments. If you are working out how a local tax question could reach a monthly payment, how escrow accounts work covers the mechanics.

Six home hockey games at Propst Arena

The Havoc are home six times this month, and every one of them starts at 7 p.m. at Propst Arena downtown. The team's own schedule release has Macon on Friday the 6th, Knoxville on Saturday the 14th, Fayetteville on Friday the 20th and again on Saturday the 21st, Athens on Thanksgiving night, and Pensacola on Friday the 27th.

The Havoc's fan page lists the November 6 game as the Veterans Game. The Athens game on Thursday the 26th is a Thanksgiving-night home date rather than the usual Friday or Saturday. The team also plays away on the 7th, 8th, 13th and 25th, so a downtown evening on those dates belongs to something else.

Veterans Day is on a Wednesday this year

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11, and the parade runs downtown. WAFF reported in September that registration had opened and that the parade would follow a new route this year.

The 2026 route and start time had not been published anywhere I could read them on October 26. Past years have started late morning, with downtown streets closing in phases beforehand. The city posts a traffic advisory and a map once the route is set, so the City of Huntsville is the page to check the week before. I have left the time and the route out rather than print last year's.

If you are buying here with a VA loan, VA loans in Alabama covers how the program works across the state and around Redstone Arsenal. The federal home-loan data lenders report each year has 1,754 VA purchase loans in the Huntsville metro in 2024, more than any other metro in Alabama.

Alabama A&M's last home game and a hockey game, both on the 14th

Alabama A&M closes its home season against Texas Southern at Louis Crews Stadium on Saturday, November 14. The university's schedule announcement has it as the last of six home games, and it had not posted a kickoff time where I could read it. The Bulldogs are at Prairie View A&M on the 7th and at Mississippi Valley State on the 21st to finish the regular season.

That is the same evening the Havoc host Knoxville, so the 14th puts two home crowds downtown and on the north side of the city at once.

The lights come on at the Botanical Garden on the 13th

Galaxy of Lights opens at the Huntsville Botanical Garden on Friday, November 13 and runs through December 31. The garden's own exhibit page says it closes on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, so the 26th is the one November night it is dark. November is the walking part of the season, and the drive-through nights start in December.

The garden's race page also has a timed 5K through the lights on Monday, November 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m., with registration closing on the 25th. A slower 3K fun run follows on December 1, the evening before the driving tour opens.

The trees go up in Big Spring Park on the 27th

The Tinsel Trail opens on Friday, November 27 and stays up through December 31. The trail's own site puts it across Big Spring Park East and West, says it is free and open at all hours, and counts more than 450 live trees. The season starts with the lighting of the Rocket City Tree at 6 p.m. that Friday. It also says the 2026 trees are sold out, which is about sponsoring one rather than walking the trail.

256 Today describes it as a Downtown Huntsville Inc. event, and the trees are real ones that get replanted or recycled afterward rather than stored.

Dates I could not confirm for this year

Seven things that show up on November lists around this metro are not in the dated list above. In every case the only date I could find belongs to a prior year.

Skating in the Park, the outdoor rink the Huntsville Museum of Art runs in Big Spring Park, has no 2026 dates posted. The 2025 season ran from November 21 into early January.

The Athens Christmas Open House in Limestone County, with its tree lighting in Merchants Alley, has no 2026 dates either. Athens Main Street lists the 39th annual edition as November 21 to 23, 2025, and the pattern has been the weekend before Thanksgiving, which is a guess rather than a date.

The Huntsville Christmas parade was December 2 in 2025 and has no 2026 date announced. It falls outside November in any case.

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra's November concert. A ticket reseller carries a Friday, November 6 date at Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, and the orchestra has not published that program where I could read it, so it is not in the list above.

The last Greene Street Market of the season. The market runs Thursday afternoons at Nativity and opened for 2026 in April, and it has not published a closing date. Recent seasons have finished in late October rather than November.

Madison's holiday events, including a tree lighting, had nothing posted for 2026 when I checked.

November shows at the Orion Amphitheater in MidCity. The venue's listed dates run into October and then stop, which fits an outdoor amphitheater, so there may be nothing to post.

New around Huntsville this year

The Memorial Parkway overpass at Mastin Lake Road opened. The Governor's office announced in October that the Parkway's through lanes and the overpass over Mastin Lake Road are fully open to traffic. It is the centerpiece of a $34 million project, and the intersection underneath was due to reopen later in October with U-turn lanes. If you are touring homes on the north side, that is a different drive than it was a year ago.

Two more road projects got funded. WAFF reported on October 20 that money is in hand for Slaughter Road and the Resolute Way interchange, with construction on Slaughter Road and design work on Resolute Way expected to begin late next year. The City of Huntsville has also approved a design contract to widen Peoples Road and Pryor Road south of Interstate 565, near a planned school in the part of Limestone County the city annexed.

Eli Lilly's campus is the largest of the announcements. The City of Huntsville's development agreement has the company building a 750,000 square foot facility at Interstate 565 and Greenbrier Parkway. The terms put the investment at not less than $4.2 billion and the hiring at no fewer than 449 full-time workers, with construction starting this year and finishing in 2032.

Two more employers broke ground or signed on. Redwire started a 164,000 square foot manufacturing and engineering campus in August, which WAFF put at 150 jobs. Blue Origin agreed in January to invest $71.4 million across Cummings Research Park and Jetplex Industrial Park to make thrusters here, with 105 jobs.

Those jobs reach a loan file directly. A job starting here changes which documents a lender reads, and it changes them again depending on whether the new job pays a salary or you work for yourself. Getting pre-approved in Alabama covers what gets reviewed before anybody writes a letter, and self-employed mortgages in Alabama covers the tax return side of it.

Common questions

What is happening around Huntsville at Thanksgiving 2026?

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26. Galaxy of Lights is closed that night, per the garden's exhibit page, and the Havoc host Athens at Propst Arena at 7 p.m. The Tinsel Trail opens the next evening with the Rocket City Tree lighting at 6 p.m., so the Friday after is the busier of the two days downtown.

When does Galaxy of Lights open in 2026?

Friday, November 13, and it runs through December 31 at the Huntsville Botanical Garden on Bob Wallace Avenue. The garden has it closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. November nights are the walking season and the drive-through nights begin in December.

Is the Tinsel Trail free, and what does sold out mean?

Walking it is free and the park is open at all hours, per the trail's own site. The sold-out notice is about sponsoring a tree for 2026, which is how the trail gets its 450-plus trees, and the site says sponsorships for next year open on August 1, 2027.

Are these events all inside Huntsville city limits?

Most are, and two are not. The Athens Christmas Open House is in Limestone County, and Alabama A&M plays on its own campus on the north side of Huntsville. This metro covers Madison and Limestone counties, and the city of Huntsville reaches into both, so a mailing address will not tell you which county a home is in or which school system serves it. My Huntsville area buyer's guide walks through that part.

I am closing on a home here in November. Does anything about the timing matter?

The Madison County Tax Assessor says the homestead exemption is not granted automatically and that you have to claim it yourself. The test is whether you owned and lived in the home on October 1 of the tax year, so a November closing puts you into the following year for it.

The order after a November closing goes like this. Your deed gets recorded with the Probate Office, which the closing attorney or the title company usually handles. Then you go to the Tax Assessor's office yourself, to put the home on the tax rolls in your name and claim the exemption. The homestead exemption after you buy in Alabama walks through the documents they ask for.

The Alabama page covers the statewide rules, and who pays which closing costs covers the contract side. Then please give me a call and tell me which towns you are looking in.
